Caroline and Dave say: Whether you’re a horse lover, a stressed-out mum, or just need a good laugh, this show is for you. Sarah Harpur is a warm-hearted and seriously funny comedian.

Sibling rivalry. Olympic ambition. Mark Todd fever-dreams. A very sexy horse.

There’s a ‘shit kid’ in every family, whether they sell ‘pony poo’ or not. In horse-mad Sharni’s family, it’s her. While twin brother Nige is off winning Olympic medals, Sharni teaches rich kids to ride horses. But Sharni has a plan. She’s going to buy the sexiest horse in town and get to the Olympics herself. The only thing standing in her way is a baby, a lack of cash and a shitty temperament.

This charming and delightfully funny one-person play is about one mediocre person. The Shit Kid explores the collision between parenthood and ambition — and features a $600 hobby horse.

Written and performed by Sarah Harpur (Kāi Tahu) and directed by Carrie Green (Ngāti Porou), The Shit Kid was shortlisted for the 2022 Adam NZ Play Award.

‘The fast-moving script is packed with a fantastic array of typical or eccentric characters, all parodied by Harpur, and reminiscent of the Topp Twins’ brilliant gallery of iconic kiwi types. A cheerful, cheeky show with a distinctly Kiwi flavour. Theatreview
