Caroline and Dave say: We’re greatly looking forward to enjoying two passionate experts sharing their extensive knowledge of the Bay of Islands area with us. Stone walls rock!

The Bay of Islands district has hundreds of dry stone walls, found wherever there are rocks from volcanic eruptions.

Kate Ballard, who has lived in rural Northland most of her life, is fascinated by the stories behind these defining features of the landscape. Her latest book Stone Wall Country: The Dry Stone Walls of Bay of Islands and Kaikohe is based on interviews with local residents, some of whom are direct descendants of the wall builders.

Kate is joined by Heritage New Zealand area manager Bill Edwards, who shares an extensive knowledge of the area. This is a must for local history buffs.
