Caroline and Dave say: We are delighted to welcome an Upsurge favourite and an exciting new voice – both strongly connected to the region.

Glenn Colquhoun, Upsurge’s favourite poet and GP, is joined by award-winning writer and former Waikato DHB doctor Jared Wiremu Kane. They will talk about their work, read from it, and possibly discuss being a doctor in the health system.

Both Jared (Ngāpuhi) and Glenn have strong links to the Bay of Islands. Hokianga and Kororāreka feature in Jared’s upcoming novel Whakarongorua, and his short story set at the head of the Hokianga Harbour will be published in Annual 2, a miscellany of writing for young people. Glenn lived in Te Tīi for a time and his first collection, Walking Upright was about that community.

Jared was this year’s emerging Māori writer in residence at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington and was 2022 supreme winner of the prestigious Surrey Hotel award. This stimulating session will cover a variety of topics and prove to us all what great medicine poetry and literature can be.
